North Carolina is 37th in the nation for teacher pay. As a result, many teachers work second jobs in order to make ends meet. It is commonplace for teachers to spend their own money on classroom supplies, because our state is 39th in the nation for per pupil spending.
But what does this look like for teachers on a day-to-day basis?
This video from NCAE features James Lynch, an NCAE member in Guilford County. James is an eighth-grade science teacher who has worked at Costco since 2009. He doesn’t live extravagantly and completed his Masters Degree hoping that would help raise his pay enough to leave his second job. It hasn’t.
